He came back, two cups of warm hot chocolate. He listened and sat across from her, handing her one. "Breathe, Sapphire. Just... breathe. Do not fret over such long term problems." He sipped and smiled warmly, a kindness that had only recently been brought to the fore. There was a gentleness in him. A kindness. He was a gentle man, not just a gentleman. It was a wonder anyone believed he was a spy or criminal at all.

"If he proves to hurt you, I will hunt him down myself with all of my simulacra at my disposal. At that very moment, five different versions of himself seemed to walk in the background of the sitting room, moving between the dining room, kitchen, and various other rooms in the small interdimensional space. They each looked similar, though muted, like snapshots in time. "Apologies. Not many have to see them. They are rather incomplete, the first of many attempts at the spell I learned as a young wizard." he coughed and sipped again. "Regardless. my point rings true, no?" His voice lowered to a whisper. "Teaching magic to you was only part of the reason I was put as your charge, my dear Sapphire. I intend to protect you to the best of my ability, for as long as I draw breath into my body."

Taking the cup of hot chocolate, she did her best to take a deep breath. His warm smile did help her calm down some, however. How he was able to be a spy for so many years baffled her. "That's not ne-"

She nearly spilled her drink when she saw five versions of himself walking around. After he explained that it was an old spell he had, she regarded him with wide eyes. She leaned forward slightly as he swore to protect her with his life. "You d-" She took another deep breath. "You don't have to. I don't like the idea of being the reason someone dies. I know you look forward to being with your wife again, but... please don't lay down your life for me. I'm not worth it."

He was happy to follow her line of thinking. A gentle smile split his lips as he sipped at the hot cocoa. "It may not be necessary, sure. I hope it definitely isn't. But, be honest with yourself. You have your whole life ahead of you, and I am at the end of my road." His hands folded around the mug, index fingers steepled. He thought for a second. Magic didn't stick, and she didn't have the focus for it, but that was fine, not everyone did. "I... I have an idea. There are still things I can teach you. Not magic.... More... practical things." His eyes narrowed and the smile changed into a cleverly grim grin.

He looked down. "I can teach you how to manipulate a court, how to sneak and not be found, how to say one thing and mean another without other people picking up. I will teach you the courts... international politics." His expression sombered. "But that would mean a long, extended trip, beyond the port of this city to realms beyond."

"No, you're not," she said. From what she was told, elves were practically immortal and they usually didn't have death on their minds. But then again, she might have been told wrong. "I'm still willing to learn magic, Amentis!" she protested. "I-" She froze when he told her he could teach her to be a spy and to manipulate those in court. "Um, that's fine? I suppose?"

Fiddling with some of her nightgown, she put her hot chocolate down before she sighed. "How long would it be?" she finally asked.

He looked positively drained when she said that. "To a human like you, I may seem immortal, and perhaps I am. But the truth of things is a bit harder to swallow. No elf or man or beast can escape the grip of death, we all meet it in our own time. As it so happens..." He leaned forward, rolling the sleeve of his robe up to show long discolored scars lining his arms. "I have been a professional at avoiding it thusly, but I cannot evade forever. Hundreds of years can seem like an eternity, and I am grateful for every minute that you make me feel like a young man. After all, I don't get the chance often."

He gave Sapphire a warm smile again, the lines fading into his tugged cheekbones. "The trip will be a month, at the least, and at most four. I want to show you the finer aspects of magic... of my school... However it's not safe to practice inside city walls with any regularity. The magic I practice is dangerous and rarely utilized beyond its destructive means. Much of it is beyond your current state of skill, but I can teach you many things." He drew a deep breath in and held it, face going blank and eyes closing as he froze for a short moment.

"No, I will teach you. But I request you pay attention and follow my every word as carefully as possible. Do I make myself clear? I will make you the finest lady to have ever set foot in the city of Solus, Even the Prince won't know who he's dealing with at the end of the next month." He grinned and winked to her, knowingly. She was to be the heir to the house of shipwrights, the smaller house as far as he knew. However, they controlled the trade by sea, and that was no small feat. She undoubtedly knew much of his courting procedures as far as how to pay attention to key players, but he had a keener eye, and would teach her to guard herself closely. She was young, yes, but she was eager to learn.

Sapphire took his arm and looked over the odd scars, running her fingertips over them. At the mention of her making him feel like a young man, she snapped her gaze up and her cheeks grew redder. "Oh. I... didn't know I had that effect." She couldn't help but give him one of her sweet smiles.

"Four months? But would anyone know we were gone?" The last time they went to another realm not a minute went by when they had returned. Perhaps it would be the same thing for this. "You want to teach me the ways of court and magic? And you say the prince won't know who he's dealing with?" His wink confused her slightly, though she did her best to keep up with what he said. She would rather be on a ship of her own and traveling the seas, but knowing what to do while in someone's court might prove useful.

After a moment, she took a deep breath and had her eyes meet his. "When do we leave?"

He shrugged and polished off his hot chocolate. “They will, sadly. I will speak tomorrow with your father about your tutelage, and you might have to make a trip to the docks tomorrow afternoon.” He closed his eyes and held his hand out.

“It is late, you should set your mind and heart at ease and go find yourself to sleep. Tomorrow will be an interesting day.” He shoed her off gently. “Go, I will be in my office in the morning...”

"Oh." Sapphire slowly sipped at her hot chocolate before he gent;y shooed her away. "Good night, Amentis."

Setting the empty mug down, she went back to his office and made her way back to her room. A few servants gave her a curious expression before she waved them off and slipped into her bed. While she finally fell asleep, she still felt disquiet. And there wasn't much else she could do.

The next morning was a busy one, and despite the activity Amentis displayed, his office and study was relatively peaceful. He made it a point to send a runner with his information to the baron. The problem with practical tutelage was that with magic it endangers the city when done improperly.

On the third bell, Amentis finished his travel preparations and started a small vat of honey, spices, and fresh spring water. The smell that wafted through the manor was fruity and sweet like a breeze through a berry patch.

Noon came, and still no word from the baron. Concern was carved into a few defined lines on his brow as he stirred the bubbling vat gently.

"But why would he take my daughter there?" the baron complained as he began to pace around the entryway. "Has he spoken to her?"

"I believe so," the messenger answered.

"Well, get Sapphire down here! And Amentis, too!"

Sapphire had already gone to the glen where Vale was waiting for her. "I'm sorry about last night," she said. "I had to speak with my tutor."

Vale sighed. "About what?"

"I'll be going away for a month."

Vale turned and took her hands into his. "Whatever for?"

"To continue my studies. But I promise I'll be back for you."

"Sapphire?" a servant called. "What on Earth are you doing with that farm boy?"

Amentis showed up early, dressed in his scale armor and dressed to the nines. He was cleaned and perfectly presentable. His presence has a tangible effect on the atmosphere. He was not looking forward to justifying why Sapphire was taking a trip into the Idrianic Empire, The Runescarred Wastes, and Orellius on a study abroad Journey.

His expression was placid, centered and detached like a rock buffeted by the wind. And there he stood, waiting for the Baron and Sapphire to arrive.

"I-"

"Sapphire, please!" the servant continued. "Your father is expecting you!"

Without another word, Sapphire was taken by the hand back to the castle, only giving Vale a disappointed expression before she was led to her room to change into a burgundy gown with a dark violet shawl and then to the conservatory, where Amentis stood in his scale armor. She stood next to him as she cast her eyes to the floor.

"Ah, there you are, little angel!" the baron said. "I was getting worried."

"I'm sorry, Father," she muttered.

"Oh, cheer up! There's no need to wallow in self pity." He turned to Amentis. "Now, why are you insisting my daughter goes with you for a month or so?"

Amentis’ expression was serious, but not severe. “Your grace. Sapphire has expressed interest in the arcane arts, unfortunately to get the proper supplies I need to teach her I have to go to a few places and call in some favors. As for why she needs to come... Doubtless you understand the arcane arts can be dangerous. I plan on crossing the inland sea to show her something important: the runescar. If she is to learn magic, she needs to see first hand what a terror it can bring.”

His face softened. “Besides, she would do well to learn the courts of many different nations, that she may be informed and wise when she is ready to make her way in the world. If safety is your concern, she will be with me the entire time.”

"She did?" the baron questioned. "Surprising."

"I did," Sapphire replied. "I think it would be good for me to learn the arcane arts and the different courts."

"Wouldn't you get homesick?"

"At least I know I have a home to come back to."

The baron nodded, turning to Amentis again. "I must admit that this is...sudden. But I would hope she would stay with you at all times." He sighed to himself. "If that is what she wants..."

"It is, Father."

He gave a knowing smile to the baron. “Your daughter is bright, and caring. No matter what course she chooses to take she will excel, of this I am certain.” He crossed his arms and the air in the conservatory grew deathly still and the intensity returned in Amentis’ expression, like a storm cloud on a wide open ocean.

“On my word as both a cleric of the Raven Queen and an arcanist of the highest caliber, your daughter will be the safest with me. On my blood, this is my pact. This trip will get her to know where she stands in the world, and will teach her diplomacy at the very least if all else fails. It will make her a prime candidate to have your family be the speaker for the council, should my plan come to fruition. But that is a much longer term goal.” There was a wind, gentle and warm that rustled his hair a bit, almost on command.
